The environment is also one of the priorities of the Caramuru Group. We are investing in a series of environmental projects with a focus on soil conservation, water reuse and environmental awareness. Learn more about each of them:
An international, multilateral technical cooperation project, ProTerra was created to develop studies on the correct use of soil. Through this project, Caramuru is supporting rural producers and raw materials suppliers who are working for our plants.
To guarantee the sustainability of the environment for future generations, this initiative encourages the rational use of natural resources as well as the recovery of degraded areas, the promotion of technology transferences and qualification for professionals on different levels working in the environmental area.
ProTerra is the first European sustainability certification developed by Cert ID, an important international certification entity. Caramuru was awarded this certificate in 2006 after realizing the importance of developing sustainability mechanisms related to the preservation of the environment. This certification demonstrates to company clients and customers of how serious our concern is for organizing sustainable processes and initiatives to help reestablish environmental equilibrium.
In order to contribute to the development of a sustainability culture in the communities where it operates, the Caramuru Group started the Acordar program of environmental education. The initiative includes, among various activities, cultural competitions, training cycles, events and celebrations of ecologic-themed days.
In line with Caramuru’s Private Social Investment Methodology, Projeto Reciclar aims to promote environmental awareness, the correct waste disposal and social inclusion, generating income for waste pickers.
Created in 2005, Estação Reciclar, a selective collection project in Itumbiara, operated in a rented shed and the service was done door-to-door through the city. Since 2012, Caramuru supports the initiative. Estação Reciclar follows the National Solid Waste Policy, which aims to assist institutions of collectors of recyclable materials, regularize the profession, remove them from landfills and create good working conditions.
In addition, it aims to generate employment and a monthly fixed income for members. The first step of the Group when joining the action was to institutionalize the Recycle Station. Subsequently, the Statute and the Minutes of the Constitution were drawn up, with the assistance of other partners, as well as the board of directors of the entity. In parallel to this, Caramuru began working with the city to seek a new headquarters – broader and with better structure – for the institution. The change from the Recycle Station to the new warehouse took place in November 2014.
Since then, with the partnerships, the Recycle Station has evolved a lot and the project. In 2016, Caramuru continued to follow the project, giving support in Business Management. In addition, through a partnership with SESI, weekly educational meetings were offered for the children of the members. The results are a source of great pride: the monthly income of each cooperative has practically quadrupled in recent years.
Launched in 2015, the Sustainability (O Sustentar) – Caramuru’s Sustainability Program for Farmers was created to guide, suggest and follow the processes of Caramuru’s raw material suppliers, in order to follow and comply with legislation and regulations, and to add value to their assets.
As part of the Group’s commitment to the communities in which it operates, the program is anchored in the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental.
In 2016, as part of Sustentar’s actions, the Group promoted 19 meetings between Goiás and Mato Grosso. This agenda was an opportunity to share with 546 rural producers the best Rural Management practices.
Among other activities, the program offers the support of the Caramuru team, with guidance and advice at no cost to the farmer, as well as proposals and suggestions for cost reduction and greater control of inputs.
